Just back from an exhibition of the recent work of a friend, Gaby Trustram, who studied illustration at Bristol University, graduating in the last few years. Gaby is now concentrating on printmaking.
Here are a few of my favourite pieces from his bold and expressive collection, featuring lots of fluid marks which do create tensions and balance as the exhibition title suggests. There's also a stark contrast between the monochrome and the 'hypercoloured' pieces. I like the child-like mix of colour very much but the black and white really held my eye and made me concentrate on the lines.

'Building Blocks' woodblock |

Untitled, this looks like a preparatory sketch that's been hung on its side, creating a sense of disorientation |
|
'City Scape' woodblock I love the scratchy texture and upward motion |
|
'Microscopia 1' drawing and monoprint Immediate and fluid, this lovely overlay of texture and colour almost leaves a flavour in the mouth |
I was also very inspired by the watercolours and collages of Carmen Guerrero
